Mint Compared to Ubuntu
I was wondering about the difference between Mint and Ubuntu. I know MInt is based on Ubuntu, just wondering if anyone is using Mint for some advice. |

Site Update in Progress
We are in the process of rebuilding the entire site: BeginLinux.com and make it easier to navigate and find the resources you need. The first major change was a new menu and structure helping people follow a Path to find information that relates to them. We also are going to rebuild the blog and tie it into the main site.
You may see things in process and find issues with things not working at some points as we make the changes. |

Ubuntu on Flash Drive
Using Ubuntu on a flash drive should be a slick way to access your servers. I would recommend a 4 GB or better flash drive so you can store data as well.
Another thought, which I have done on Centos servers is installing the kernel for tiny core linux(http://tinycorelinux.com/). This 10MB distro can then be used to boot your server and fix problems. |

I installed Citadel and you are right it is easy to install and very straightforward. Again, you are right that the icons are basic but it works...some of the users I showed it to said they thought it would be ok, so I may try it. |

I was here a while back and did not recognize how many pages of info you guys have for free. I see that now you have a new menu which has helped me find a lot of new stuff...keep up the good work. |

Hey..thanks for the quick response. I will have to install it to see how it looks. Of course installing Dovecot and Squirrelmail is ugly looking as well. How does Citadel compare to Squirrelmail?
I know it is easy to set up as well, but I have people complain about how it looks and also the features are limited. |

The Citadel Mail Server has several nice attributes. First, it is easy to install. This is likely the easiest mail server to install with the most features that I have seen.
The only negative that I have seen with administrators that use it is that Citadel use icons that are basic and some admins have even called "childish". If you have mail users coming from Exchange you may have some negative comments from users on looks, but it is simple to use and easy to install. |

Ubuntu on Flash Drive
Hey..I am thinking about putting Ubuntu on a flash drive so that I can carry a live Linux distro wherever I go. I work on servers all the time so I would like to have a way to boot up a server and make repairs if I needed to.
So...how well will this work? |

File Types
In answer to the question below on file types.
Everything in Linux is a file...so hardware devices like a partition, /dev/sda1 is represented by a file that system can use as if it was the actual hardware device. Look in the /dev directory and you will see all of those files.
Block Devices are hard drives.
Characters Devices represent things like printers, TTY, etc. which have streaming characters.
Major numbers help the system know what a device is for example, the major number 9 is always a RAID device, the major number 2 is a floppy, and major 6 is a printer.
Minor numbers tell you which printer, printer number one is 0, the second printer is 1....remember it starts with 0. So the minor number tells you the number of devices you have with that major number.
Named pipes transfer information on the local system between applications.
Hello,
I have a few questions about Device files.
What actually are Character Devices and Block Devices? Where and How are they useful?
What are the Major and Minor Device numbers? How and where can I check them ? How are they useful?
How are the Named Pipes useful?
Thanks

Ubuntu 10.04 is not yet stable so it's hard to say. Any reason for not trying 9.10 or are you just exploring?
Here's some tips on setting up Ubuntu wireless |

Make sure you are using the correct command. Be sure that a "/" is in front of the directory as you are starting from root of the file system. If if you have really lost this directory you will not be able to run the server as most of the configuration commands are here as you see listed.
