the new changes in 10.04 are pretty and refreshing

the button location is also justified because it make it easier to access the top bar and desktop icons(which are generally kept on the right)

i was gettin tired if the ol' orange theme.
after all, the only thing which constant is change.

First of all, the buttons on the left would have kept me from using this version. But I found this:

Alt + F2

gconfg-editor

Then navigate to apps > metacity > general

Find button_layout

Right-click and select Edit Key

Paste this in there:

menu:minimize,maximize,close

Click Ok

I found this at:
http://wojox.homelinux.org/?p=65

But,now I don't see these same instructions.:|

As for the Desktop and themes, I always customize to my taste anyway.

Still setting-up this fresh install, so we'll see how it goes. ;)

ubuntu karmic 9.10 sound fix solved

did a fresh install , did a full update, waited and 24 hrs later did another, installed ati catalyst, then…..

redone for more recent pakages, as well, removed a couple useless ones
doesnt involve removing pulse. gets sound through hdmi earphones and laptop speakers
still testing, but all works

sudo reboot

i find it a little glitchy with pulse still installed. but ive only been messing with it for an hr after install. also notice that it seems there needs to be another entry in a sound file, posibly a pulse conf or sound conf, i think one of the freezing issues may be due to 2 sound cards and one command?? will look into it, info would be great.

It’s only been two weeks since Facebook announced support for the XMPP/Jabber protocol, and Facebook chat support is already supported in Lucid Alpha 3. Empathy now includes Facebook chat along with the multitude of other chat protocols that it supports.

Same, but I'll get used it. Might have to move my mouse a few hundred pixels further, but whatevahs. I just hope their ideas for how to use the newly empty top right are good.

I can live with changing the background and theme colors but can't stand the location of the title bar buttons...

Topic : setting up router in ubuntu

Ok I figure this part out now I need to be able to pass my static IPs from my comcast router through ubuntu router. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great, here is what I did to fix the first issue.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=827425

There were two things missing on the ubuntu server, one was to enable the pass through from nic 1 to nic 2 and the other was something with IP MASQUE

This is what I did from the above article.
Quote:
1) IP forwarding has to be enabled on the server. You can check this with 'sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward' (you don't need root access for this). If it returns zero, you need to enable forwarding with 'sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1', then uncomment the similar line in /etc/sysctl.conf so forwarding is enabled at boot.
2) iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE

I am trying to use ubuntu server 9.10 to be the router behind the comcast router. The issue is that the servers behind the ubuntu router cant get to the internet. They can ping the ubuntu router. Is there something I have to do to tie in the 2 nics on the router? Here is the routers interfaces file
Code:
root@router:~# cat /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 173.162.xxx.xxx netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 173.162.xxx.xxx auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.0.1 network 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255

Topic : Which Linux Distro Should You Choose?

@aweber thanks for your reply. I agree with you on that. Whenever you google something about a Linux-related issue you will find that the first search results are resolved under Ubuntu.

I think the different Distros can serve users from certain perspective according to users interests.
e.g. talking about the Ubuntu itself, there are: Kubuntu, Edubuntu, XUbuntu, UbuntuStudio, Mythubuntu, etc.

So, they are armed with the necessary tools to serve that perspective and users may select the one fitting their interests. Either to taste different desktop environment, for education purposes, or multimedia production, etc.

Although these are not different Distros but Ubuntu derivatives that are tailored to areas of interests, and one can even tailor Ubuntu itself so it accommodates all the derivatives under one OS. Well, this is the powerful aspect of Linux, Flexibility!

Derivatives are very useful for beginners to get them acquainted with the tools utilized in certain areas.

But talking about Distros, why would somebody prefer one Distro to another?

Well, I prefer to use Ubuntu for various reasons, some of them: popularity, many supported packages (.deb packages), ease of use, etc.

So,

Why would somebody prefer Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mint, etc. to another one?
Do users really need a feature that exists in a Distro but not in another?

I really would hear from those whose choice is a Distro other than Ubuntu!!

It's true many distros are similar and that too many exist. I think
it's a disadvantage on one hand because if beginners start working with a less known distro it's much harder for them to get help. I always recommend Ubuntu for absolute beginners mostly because the amount of help available from other users etc..

It does offer one advantage and that is tweak and customized desktop options that might appeal more or be easier for beginners to run.

Thanks for posting Hsmak, you're insight is always appreciated.

Topic : Which Linux Distro Should You Choose?

As every Linux user, beginner to advanced, has noticed that there are many distros available to use. Most of those are just derivatives of other distros like debian, ubuntu, gentoo, Fedora, etc.

So, if somebody is wondering whether there is a kind of uniqueness in each, then what would that be?? Why do we have such huge number of distros?
Some even says that this is one disadvantage of using Linux!! well, personally I don't agree with that...

So, what does everybody think of this?
