Distance-Vector Distance-Vector Routing Protocols Distance-vector routing protocols learn the distance and the direction to all routes on the network. RIP and IGRP are both distance vector protocols. RIP uses the best path available, the one with the fewest number of hops. Hops are the number of times that a packet travels through a router. Routing protocols build routing tables dynamically and put the best routes in the routing table. They also recognize routes that are no longer valid, or when routers are added to a network. |
