I started using virtualization by downloading applicances from Vmware. The problem with that was the Linux distros I ran on Vmware weren't available as appliances for a long time after they were released. someone had to build the appliances with the Linux distro.
Then I moved to using
EasyVMX.com
to run .iso files on VMware. This was a big step because it cut down the wait time for someone to make the appliance.
Then came virtualbox which is even better because it doesn't depends on anything. Just put it the .iso, choose your specs and you're good to go. I've had zero problems with Virtualbox and it has made my virtual desktop experience 50 times better.
Here's what my current Virtualbox list looks like.
