CIDR CIDR or Classless Inter-Domain Routing is the method that ISP use to allocate address to a network. Now for example what if you ISP provides you with a with an IP address that looks like 192.168.7.2/30. What does this mean? Well the / stands for your subnet mask. So in this example the 30 stands for 30 bit turned on. Remember the light bulb? It means that 30 bits starting from the left are 1’s. It should look like this. 11111111.11111111.11111111.11111100 in binary. If you add up these binary digits you get a number that looks like this 255.255.255.252. This would be your subnet mask for this class C address.
