Setting Up An IP Address
Networking - Network Concepts

Users will need to know how to configure the IP address, Gateway and DNS for a static configuration. Remember that a static configuration is when you are given an IP address that will always be yours. A Dynamic IP address is always changing within a given range. Here are the steps to configure the TCP/IP settings.

 Linux Settings:

network

Windows Settings:

First a user must go to the Network and Dial-up Connections area. From There a user must either make a new connection and select the appropriate selections that pertain to the users network or right click the Local Area Connection and select properties.

Note: A user my have several different Local Area Connections. Each of these can use different settings. It is much easier to create several connections instead of changing the TCP/IP settings each time a user wants to use a different setting.

A user will then come to this screen. At this screen the user has the option to configure the TCP/IP settings on the network card. The user will then click the Configure button to change these settings.

This screen will appear when the user is configuring the TCP/IP settings. Here you can Add, Edit, or Remove IP address and Gateways. Also the subnet mask can be set up here also. Pay attention to the subnet mask, using an invalid subnet mask will result in a faulty connection.

In this example we are just showing how to set up the IP address and the DNS. The Gateway works in similar fashion. Input the correct IP address, then click ok. Troubleshoot as necessary.
