Hello,
I have Ubuntu/Linux newly installed on my laptop. My fiance had to go out of town and I am trying to help him remotely get connected to the wireless internet at his hotel. We have tried the ifconfig and it comes up no connection. I know about a week ago i was goofing with the internet options on this computer and it came up with a list of wireless connections in my area but all were locked so I left it. Now it will show the list of previous wireless networks but will not refresh to show available networks where he is. How do I get the wireless to connect???

Open a terminal so you have the command line and run this command:

sudo dhclient

You will need to enter the root user password which is the same as the first user on the laptop.

dhclient will try to pick up an IP address from the server. If this does not work in a motel, you may have to talk to them to see if you need to add a name for ssid.

Also you can list what your system picks up with:

sudo iwconfig

we tried both ideas, and got nothing.

the dhclient says
DHC disc on 255.255.255.5.. port 67 interval.... then there are a bunch of different numbers then it says no dhc offers recieved. no persistant database-sleeping

then waiting for commant

You will need to go to the command line and discover if you have the proper drivers for the laptop wireless card and you want to be sure you configure the wireless. Here is a link to wireless support:

Has the wireless ever worked...if so it is only configuration.

I am not sure if the actual wireless physically worked. Not long after I installed it (as my laptop completely crash and a good friend of mine uses this system and told me it was the best) I had always had it with wired internet and was curious to see if the wireless worked, I had clicked on some different things and it came up with a list of different wireless networks (i think its called.... all the places around here that have wireless). all of them on the list were locked, so i closed it out and never tried again. Now in a panic my fiance took the laptop and we have been fighting to get it to get the wireless. We have become extremely frustrated. It is also tough as daddy promised our 6 kids he would see them on the cam on the computer to say goodnight every night and we can't seem to make it happen. Now, with this link you gave me, he can not access it so I guess I should and then give him the info?
