nano provides a command so that you can get a list of the number of lines, characters and words in a file. Use the command M-D, remember this is Alt-D. Note the "-" and that it is a capital "D". When you do that you will get a list at the bottom center with the information you wanted. To see your current location in the file use the ^C which will provide you with that information.
