Fedora Wireless Setup
Desktop Apps Training - Wireless

Linux Desktop TutorialsThe tutorial you're about to read has been marked as one of our older tutorials. While it may still prove useful to you, we recommend visiting our more recent desktop tutorials section.

This example was chosen because it represents a typical situation where you have an older Dell laptop with internal wireless support and you want to use Fedora 10 on that laptop.  This is a great way to continue to use those older laptops.  After Fedora 10 has been installed you can go to System/Administration/Network.  Here you see that under the Hardware tab the Dell TrueMobile 1150 S wireless card has been detected.  However you will need to configure it to work with your network.  In order to get it working you need to create a wireless connection by selecting the Devices tab and choosing “New”.  This will open up the window you see below.  Be sure to choose Wireless connection for the Device Type.

Once you have chosen the Wireless connection hit Forward and specifically select the Dell TrueMobile card.  You can see that if you wanted to set up other cards that option does exist.

Notice that the wireless device in this example is eth1.  The next window that opens is where you must set the SSID of your network.  In the example, the SSID is cydo, your network name for the SSID will be different so you must be sure to put your name in that box.  Also, this is Managed network.  If you are not sure what your SSID is, try auto here to see if it will automatically be detected.  The channel and the transmit rate should be automatically detected so you do not need to enter that information.

Configuring your network connections as seen in the next window should be automatic.  You will allow the router or wireless access point assign the IP Address with DHCP and so you will not need to do anything in this window.

A summary of your settings will be presented.

You are not quite done because you will also need to activate the network card.  Choose activate and wait for the system to turn the card on and reset the network configuration.

Configuration is complete and you should now have Internet access.  If you restart your system and the wireless is not working open up the network interface and be sure to activate your wireless card if it is not activated.  A typical problem with Gnome desktop is that it does not automatically start your wireless.
