Check Uptime

The uptime command reveals how long the system has been running without a reboot. Often a cracker will reboot a machine in order to complete a root kit install so it is important to know the last time your server was restarted.
Here is the command and the output on a server.

uptime

3:29pm up 105 days, 7:22, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
If there is a reboot on the server that was not initiated, it is time to look closer.
