I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on an old laptop and it has installed well and even the wireless pcmcia card works! However the display is stuck at 800x600 and there is no option to go to 1024x768, which is the display's native resolution.

It has a Trident Microsystems CyberBlade i1 graphics cards. System > Preferences > Display says Monitor: Unknown.

How can I fix this to get it to 1024x768?

The quickest solution is to use the generic option so that you can get your resolution correct. There are two pieces to the puzzle:
1. Find what video card you have
Then you can list it with the options.
2. Find make and model of your monitor so you can choose that in the options as well.
