CentOs is a great choice as it is built from source code of Red Hat Enterprise so it goes through a lot of testing and is rock solid. You will find that it is conservative in terms of applications that are in the repository because everything is tested so much. But yoou cannot go wrong if you are building a Linux server. |

Thanks for the advice as I have built myself a cheap server from a purchase off Ebay and I am really happy with CentOS as it seems rock solid as you suggested. I am building several machines now and I am thinking about virtualization as I want to get the most out of my hardware. Just wanted to give an update as I am still working along. |

That is great...progress is always good. If you are looking a virtualization you really have some excellent choices. The one I prefer as it uses the least amount of resources so you can use them on your server is OpenVZ. Here is an article on setting it up:

The other option I really like and I put it on my Desktop workstation, which is Debian, is VirtualBox. Again it is rock solid and gives me lots of options as I usually run a server with OpenVZ and 20-30 servers at the same time for testing and doing other activities and several are usually loaded on my desktop. It is a great way to build an entire network of machines to test with and all you need is a couple machines. Here is an article on setting up the new version of VirtualBox.
