You  have a wide choice of multimedia options. By installing packages like mplayer, Totem, and Helix, you'll be set to play mp3's, Windows Media, and RealPlayer-type multimedia files. You'll also be able to play the newer, open-sourced format files.



From the Ubuntu desktop if you try to play an .mp3 file you'll need to follow the Ubuntu prompts to get it to plan in an application like Rythmbox.

The first thing you'll see when playing an .mp3 on Ubuntu is this window asking to search for a suitable plugin.

After clicking Search wait while Plugin Packages are searched. In the background the necessary codecs will be listed out. In this case it's two different gstreamer plugins we need. click Install when the search is over.

If you visit a web site that requires Flash, you'll be given the chance to download and install the official Flash plug-in from Adobe.
