Gantt is an excellent chart based tool for project scheduling and management. Gantt allows you to break projects down into individual tasks, make one task dependent on another one, and boost productivity. A few features that Gantt offers up front are the task hierarchy and dependencies, Gantt chart, resource load chart, generation of PERT chart, PDF and HTML reports, MS Project import/export, and WebDAV based groupwork.

After installing Gantt and opening the application we should see an image similar to the one below.

On the left is where we will place new tasks and the display calender on the right is where the tasks time line is displayed. Towards the top of the screen we see two tabs Gantt and Resources. The Gantt tab shows the tasks while the Resources tab shows are human resources or workers.

To create a new project click on Project on the menu bar at the top of the window, then select New. On the first step of the create a new project window we can specify Name, Organization, Web Link, and a Description of your project. When you are finished click the Next button.

The second step is asking us to choose role sets or preset jobs for workers. Depending on the job at hand you may leave this on the default option.

The next step, step 3 of 3, asks us to set any holidays, which can be selected by origin. Users can also select what days are considered work days and what days are weekends.

When finished click OK.

Now that you have created a project you may add tasks to the project. To do this right click in the left window and select New Task

To edit a task right click on a task and select task properties. With the properties window up we have five tabs to choose from. These tabs allow us to change general, predecessor, resource, edit note, and custom column options.

To add smaller tasks within a task, in my example the different parts of the template, just add a new task, right click it and select indent.  Now css and html tasks are both appearing inside the create_template task
