Project: Layers and Text Tool

Working with layers is a very important tool to understand when working with images. Most editing is done in Layers. In this project I will show you how to do some simple tasks with Layers. First, to create a new layer click the new layer button . The New Layer dialog box will appear. Here you can edit the Name of the Layer, the Fill Type and the size.

Here you can see I named my Layer and the fill type was transparency. Next highlight the Background layer by clicking on it. Next click the eye. This will turn off the background layer so that you will no longer be able to see it.

Note: To edit a layer you must highlight the layer. To hide a layer you must click the eye.

Now that you have the Background Layer turned off, lets use the Text Tool. The Text Tool is the one that is highlighted. Select the settings desired for the title of the photograph. Then click on the photograph where you want to put the title.

I clicked in the center of the Title Layer with the Text tool selected. The GIMP Text Editor appeared. I then typed in “Flying High” When you are finished click close.

Now you have created your third layer. This layer is just a text layer.

Now go back to the Layers Dialog box and turn the eye back on for the Background Layer.

The photograph with a title.

Notice that we have an extra layer. To git rid of extra layers highlight the layer and click the trash can at the bottom of the screen.

To duplicate a layer click the button with the two pages, and use the up and down arrows to move layers up or down. The top layer is the top layer of the photograph and is seen first.

Highlight the Flying High Layer and click the down arrow. Notice how “Flying High” disappears.
